BIO certification for Volmary's herb and vegetable production

The Volmary herb and vegetable production site in Selm was recently certified "BIO" and is now ready to produce certified organic young plants!

Our herb and vegetable production site in Selm was recently certified organic and is now ready to produce certified organic young plants! This means that our herb customers, whether organic or conventional, can now rely on another important building block in the production chain. This is because the use of organic young plants produced in Germany increases the sustainability component enormously.

At Volmary, we have been working on the continuous development of our production processes for a very long time. In doing so, we focus on sustainable optimisation in order to use our resources responsibly and sparingly and to have as little impact on our environment as possible. Our entire production chain undergoes a constant process of further development.

As a plant breeder, we focus on breeding plants that are resistant or tolerant to fungal and animal pathogens. However, the development of cold- and heat-tolerant plants to combat climate change and the breeding of compact plants that require little or no use of inhibitors also play a major role for us. Natural resources such as water, soil, nutrients and energy are used as sparingly as possible in our plant production.

An important building block is plant protection and the reduction of synthetic pesticides throughout the entire production chain. Integrated pest management is not just an empty phrase for us, but a lived practice. The use and promotion of beneficial organisms is promoted through regular screening of crops. The use of plant strengthening agents, such as Multikraft to vitalise the natural plant defence system, is also part of our daily routine. The promotion of our organic production and corresponding certifications demonstrate the success of our actions.

NDR gardening professional Peter Rasch visits Volmary

NDR gardening professional Peter Rasch visits Volmary. Whether it's a mini balcony or your own allotment: Peter Rasch has creative ideas and an answer to every gardening question. On 15 August 2023, the gardener from Norddeutscher Rundfunk visited Volmary. The reason: to give end consumers an insight into the elaborate production of a large selection of plants. Volmary plant professional Christina Schmitz accompanied Peter Rasch across the colourful trial field at Kaldenhof, explaining various aspects of breeding, grading and the Volmary range of varieties. Of course, there were also a few tips on flower care. The programme will be broadcast in May 2024.

Volmary's contribution to a better climate

A 2232-metre-long chain of balcony boxes for the opening of the Federal Garden Show (BUGA)

Under the motto "World record for the climate", Bauhaus organised a 2232-metre-long chain of balcony boxes for the opening of the Federal Garden Show (BUGA) 2023 in Mannheim. These were planted on various themes to show how everyone can make a contribution to a better climate with the help of a flower box.

Volmary plant professional Bernd Wenninghoff organised some of these balcony boxes together with Volmary concept gardeners Helmut Lörcks, Hermann Teeuwen and Stefan Schwarz. They designed the boxes with various combinations of Volmary herbs, vegetables, fruit and Naturbiente® flower mixes.

On 1 September 2022, more than 160 trainees and their trainers from the green sector came together for T.A.G. (Top Ausbildung Gartenbau). The T.A.G. initiative invites training companies in horticulture and their trainees to an eventful day every year. This year's venue was Volmary GmbH with its production facility in Senden and its headquarters at the Kaldenhof plant breeding centre in Münster.

After a warm welcome by Hubertus Volmary and Mr Lutz Fischer from the Landesverband Gartenbau, Josephine Volmary gave a vivid presentation of Volmary GmbH. Immediately afterwards, the participants were able to take part in an exclusive tour of the modern young plant production facility in Senden. The guests then travelled to the plant breeding farm and Volmary headquarters at Kaldenhof. Here, in addition to interesting presentations on the use of beneficial organisms and plant breeding, the visitors also had the opportunity to take part in plant tours with Volmary experts through the wide variety of trial fields.

So that the trainees' manual skills could also be put to use, they were able to plant young plants of Mix a Twix® horned violets in plant pots under the guidance of the Volmary plant professionals and take them home to grow. Of course, all participants were provided with delicious food and cool drinks throughout the day
